MaIN SHOW: Interstices
In the world of contemporary collectible design, objects transcend mere function to become vehicles of storytelling and cultural expression. Designers with mixed heritage, existing at the intersection of multiple identities, challenge traditional narratives by blending diverse cultural traditions. Their work creates innovative pieces that are both deeply personal and culturally resonant, moving beyond simple function to serve as powerful vehicles for storytelling.
Non-Western cultures are often portrayed through outdated frameworks, either as static or viewed through anthropological or colonial lenses, which deny them a place in the global contemporary narrative. Designers of mixed heritage challenge these reductive views by exploring their own diverse cultural influences and weaving them into their work. Their designs reflect personal explorations of identity, heritage, and belonging, offering a more nuanced and contemporary perspective.
This exhibition explores how these designers navigate the complexities of identity and cultural exchange, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary design. Their work redefines the boundaries of cultural interaction, emphasizing the importance of context, origin, and meaning in the design process.

“Oh - To Be Instituted”
The Actual Main Institute (TAMI) is a starting point for a range of imagined cultural institutions - from public museums to research institutes, and private galleries. TAMI is an investigation into what a cultural institution truly is, and acts as a placeholder for those in need of an adequate context for their work; turning around the order of supply and demand between practitioner and institution. Rather than a physical, permanent venue, it serves as an adaptable container for a wide range of expressions and functions.
During Rotterdam Design Biennale at Huidenclub, they will host a live “production line,” where they will be creating tailor-made institutions in real time. As these fictional institutions are created, the gallery cube at Huidenclub will transform into both a factory and a showroom, offering an interactive environment for the audience. Each day, elements like gallery/museum facades, backstories of institutions, and visual identities will be added, creating a dynamic catalog.

Brancusi left Paris
For the inaugural Design Biennale, Giulia Cosenza and Jonas Lutz present "Brancusi Left Paris," a unique collection of sculptures born from their first collaboration. Showcased at Het Groothandelsgebouw and Huidenclub, the duo's work explores tactile, evocative compositions that challenge the senses. Inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s philosophy of showing the essence of things in their material form, Cosenza and Lutz’s pieces engage with the Biennale theme "What's Real Is Unfamiliar" through playful, abstract forms in ceramics and wood. The exhibition invites the public to reflect on the timeless craft of sculpting and the fusion of traditional techniques with innovative design, featuring objects that defy conventional expectations, such as a vase that becomes a pillar and a soft-looking hard wood.
