Conferences Overview

The first conference, taking place at Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam’s design and architecture museum, will explore design’s role in shaping cities and communities, reflecting on how Rotterdam’s unique environment fosters experimental and socially-driven practices. Following a keynote by Joseph Zeal Henry, a designer, urbanist, and curator whose work bridges cultural production and equitable urban development, sessions will include discussions on how the industrious spirit of harbour cities drives innovation, a conversation with some of our local biennale ambassadorial hosts about the city's creative pulse, and a look at how Rotterdam’s working-class history influences the value and definition of contemporary design.

This second conference explores how design navigates the complexities of cultural hybridity, identity, and appropriation in a globalised world. How do designers address historical legacies, balance tradition with innovation, and reclaim heritage while challenging dominant narratives? How can design transcend reductive portrayals and foster meaningful, contemporary cultural dialogues? The discussion highlights how designers are reshaping narratives, bridging diverse traditions, and reimagining the global design canon, offering fresh perspectives that redefine identity in today’s interconnected world.
